RSPB Minsmere FeaturedMinsmere RSPB reserve is a nature reserve run by the RSPB in Suffolk. It was established in 1948 as the Minsmere Bird Reserve. Set on the beautiful Suffolk coast, Minsmere offers both families and birdwatchers an enjoyable day out. Nature trails take you through a variety of habitats to the excellent birdwatching hides. In the summer you can watch avocets and marsh harriers or hear booming bitterns. On the beach, a special area is cordoned off to protect nesting little terns. It is best known for its wetland breeding birds, including Great Bittern, Western Marsh Harrier, Pied Avocet and Bearded Reedling. It forms part of the Minsmere - Walberswick Special Protection Area which includes a large swathe of coastal land from the estuary of the River Blyth southwards to the Minsmere River. In September 2004 a moth species, Catocala conjuncta (Esper), previously unrecorded in Britain was found on the reserve. To acknowledge its place of capture it was given the common name Minsmere Crimson Underwing. Map
