Old Moor is only a short drive from Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield and yet, with its extensive visitor facilities, it is a fantastic place to watch wildlife at the heart of the Dearne Valley.
The landscape includes open water, marsh, reedbeds and grassland.
In winter, over 8,000 golden plovers join many other wading birds and waterfowl on the reserve. In summer, watch swallows and martins over the open water and dragonflies buzzing over flower-filled ditches.
Old Moor is an ideal site for both beginners and experienced birdwatchers alike. There is plenty for families to do, with a specially designed play area and Wildlife Explorer backpacks for free loan during visits.
