Hello Paul.
Only just read your question, heres my 2pennyworth;
Residents; robin, blackbird, sparrows, dunnock, thrush, great, blue and coal tits, magpie, pigeon, wood pigeon, collered dove. If your garden backs on to open country or woodland you should get many more; jay, jackdaw, crow, gold and green finch, woodpecker greater spotted and green, and if you are very lucky lesser spotted, siskin, maybe goldcrest. If you have a fish pond you might be unlucky enough to see a heron making off with your fish! Can't think of any more just now but there must be loads.
Migrants will depend on what kind of country you are surrounded by. If you have low scrub and small trees you should see willow warblers, chiff chaff, black caps and white throats. I say see but these birds can be very hard to spot once the trees are in leef. You may have to identify them by song. Easy once you get the hang of it. Get a cd of birdsong if you haven't got one already. Open fields will attract swallows. High up in the sky you should see swifts.
Let us know what you see.
