You can find fault with them by 2009 standards but they're hundred year old pictures!
I think the fact that anyone was interested enough in 'popular ornithology' to write a book about it back then is a cause for celebration, to be honest.
Go to any museum, you'll find stuffed birds in the natural history section. The fulmar picture is pretty gross, but its probably the only reason it stayed still long enough for the picture. Likewise the sparrowhawks!
