And the final nail in the coffin for this poor book is this absolutely undefendable picture of DEAD Hawfinch. I know that back in 1910 they were not as PC as we are today but how on earth were you supposed to use this book for ID purposes when it published pictures of the quality it has.

After the last dreadful offering I thought I’d lighten the mood with this, one of my favourite old books “A Bird Book for the Pocket” by Edmund Sanders third edition, published by Oxford University Press in 1933. The author either couldn’t afford a quality artist or fancied himself as one because he drew all the illustrations himself, resulting in some very comical and odd-looking specimens. I’ll start by showing you some examples then post a couple of the odder ones for you to have a guess at just for a bit of fun.
1, Stonechats with odd shaped heads. 2, Long-eared Owl with a hunched back. 3, Very stern looking Peregrines with extra large beaks and flat heads

The reason this is one of my favourite old books is the child like quality of the authors illustrations, I think these 2 of a Kingfisher and a Puffin demonstrate what I mean.

How do you explain the "sickly Fulmar" the Merlin being pictured after catching a Song Thrush, Stuffed Sparrowhawks...... I could post nearly all the plates from this book and find fault with all of them.
