As i am cycling over the ribble to preston.... and aroundabouts there!Today i heard it coming towards me from one side of the bridge so i rushed to the other side to see if i could see it.....!Nope as usual..the sound is something like peww wiiii several seconds then the same again,it must only be small because i have not seen it yet.........!Heard it loads..!Went on the rspb site checking out the waders sounds no joy.....!Any help most appreciated..!Peace...Its not a lapwing pee wit....!and it seems to fly really fast ......as when it is calling it soon fades away, always on the river. The river is tidal where i am and there is always a lot of mud..!

I thought about Grey Plover but they are usualy pretty obvious and not particularly fast flyers, images as requested (these aren't my own images, they're my friends from Crail, John anderson)

BELOW: summer plumage Grey Plover

BELOW: winter plumage

BELOW: watch out for the diagnostic black armpits

cheers, John

Learnt,a few important lessons here i think!firstly the importance of birdcalls in id birds ,and secondly getting to know what you are likely to see wherever you are going to be..!I have checked out some links on birds on the ribble due to this,as it my local patch which believe it or not i have never really in depth done before..!Every week i am down there bumming around for one reason or another either, drifting, walking, cycling or birding....!A lot of the birds i have seen, but a lot i have not, i will be familiarizing myself with there calls and appearance pronto..........!Peace...!
