Hmm. What direction was it travelling? Had a Swallow at Ainsdale yesterday, flying south in a very determined fashion!!! And who can blame it? Time the weather people tried rebooting Spring....

Flying north, parallel to the M6.

Two Redpolls on the garden feeders yesterday morning - couple of weeks later than previous years.

Todays BOTD is a House Martin prospecting for a nest site under the eaves of our house. My first this year.

Swallows for me too, approx a dozen whilst out for a walk with the boys. Also a few chiffchaffs and an invisible blackcap. It sounded more like spring than it felt in the murk!

Every autumn, a solitary black redstart turns up around the Ainsdale Discovery Centre in - erm - Ainsdale; last year's bird was a juvenile, prompting speculation that they had bred in the immediate area. This morning, after walking the dog on the beach, I bumped into a mini-twitch at the Discovery Centre, where the first ever (as far as I know) Spring bird (a female) was showing well, feeding on insects in the buckthorn and calling loudly. Passage bird or returning to a previous breeding ground? We'll probably never know, but either way definitely my bird of the day.

BOTD, well yesterday evening was a Greater Scaup.
And the Bonaparte's Gull is looking rather nice in it full adult summer plumage. Also had my first Common Whitethroat of the year.

Just had a few days in the South Lakes, where despite very un-springlike weather I heard my first Willow Warblers and Blackcaps of the year, and saw my first Swallows and House Martin.
