went out on two wild goose chases this weekend. Was checking Bird Guides and then rushed out. No sign when I got there!

I've started noticing that reports of Waxwings are tailing off. I think there are two possible explanations:
a. They've gone or
b. So many have seen them that they've become less reported.

I think it's the latter which makes my job of finding them really hard. They're just unlike so many birds as you have to walk the streets to find them and they don't stick around.

Well if it doesn't happen then I'll just have to cope!

Unless they are now in France!

It must be B, how long can even the most ardent birder keep reporting. Sorry you haven't seen one yet.

I see they are still being reported in plenty of numbers on Birdguides. Don't forget they are needed on 2011 lists now!

I haven't been able to track one down so far in 2011, although I've only tried half-heartedly!

Both Bristol and Somerset Ornithological Clubs are still reporting the sightings diligently, Somerset doing much better than Bristol at present! I appreciate that doesn't help an East Midlander, but maybe the local clubs are doing the same?

well, whadda ya know!

Went down the local shops for my Sunday newspaper and there were 25 Waxwings in the car park. Couldn't believe my luck.

I watched them for a while and noticed that they were sitting on a tree with no food. When they all took off they headed straight for me to a Rowan covered in berries. Suddenly out of the blue a Thrush burst out from a tree really protecting it's dinner. It forced the Waxwings back to the tree they'd come from and then stayed amongst them for 5 minutes making it's point very clearly! The Waxwings had enough of this after a while and cleared off.

Was excited to make my first ever report on Birdguides and was too carried away to check my spelling. Was horrified to see it come up in the list of birds for tehcounty with the most apalling grammar.

Great stuff.
