Thumbs up Waxwings

Finally seen Waxwings on my local patch! They have found an orchard they like with plenty of old apples to eat.

Saw one last weekend and there were 26 about today.

The first one spotted a couple of weeks ago was at Paddock Wood train station near the ticket office of all places!

Nice one Neil.

I reckon anyone who has ever wanted to see a waxwing won't have a better chance than this year, they're more or less everywhere!

Smile Waxwings Kent

I've seen lots of Waxwings over the Christmas break around my local patch.

In fact they are still about - I saw some this morning!

It's always the same place too which is considerate of them!

I've seen about 24 in one go, although there may have been more since they wouldn't stay put too long.

Default Waxwings in Shropshire

Hi All, I spotted 2 Waxwings today in Whitchurch in Shropshire, they were feeding by the side of a roundabout! I'm sure there were a lot more of them as I could see a tree in the distance with lots of birds in it which they flew to. I'm so excited as I'm new to this and they were top of my wish list!

Just when do you think I should panic? I keep reading that we're 'in the midst of the biggest Waxwing winters in living memory' and I've not sen a single one.

I'm checking Birdguides every few hours for a local sighting but nothing. Frustratingly somebody reported a sighting of 20 a matter of yards from my workplace but didn't report it for a day. By the time i went round they were gone as expected.

So, what should I do?

Gavin, I wouldn't panic yet!!

Where are you based? Is there a local bird club / ornithological club that has a website updated with daily sightings, that might be your best bet?

If theres any larger groups reported in the area, they tend to linger for a couple of days at least. Smaller groups can be harder to track down.

The majority seem to have left the Bristol area for the time being, but the odd single bird is still being reported. Somerset seems to be faring a little better.

Good luck!

Look for local orchids in your area or trees that still have berries on them. They may appear eventually. Even local parks with favourable trees. Good luck.
Still loads in Glasgow
but mainly down to low numbers 20's to 50's scattered.
