Default RSPB coming to town.

Just read on Manchester Birding that RSPB are setting up at Dovestones Reservoir a couple of miles up the road. Not a very big fan of RSPB, and I can't see exactly what they're going to do with the site. Its just a great big reservoir with a path all the way round thats very popular with dog walkers. A Yacht club uses the place most weekends and holidays and has a club house at one end. What has already been set out is the mandatory shop and visitor centre.

Dovestones Reservoir sits at the bottom of the moors above Greenfield, at the north east corner of the reservoir sits Yeoman Hey Reservoir with Bill-o-Jacks plantation to the left hand bank which holds records of Crossbill and Wood Warbler amongst others. Carrying on past Yeoman brings you to Greenfield Reservoir fed by Greenfield Brook coming off the moors in a steep sided ravine a good spot for Ring Ouzel in spring.
At the south east corner of Dovestones is Chew piece Plantation which usually holds Green Woodpecker and Redstart, behind the plantation runs a steep track up to Chew Reservoir on the top of the moors.

Looks a nice area Merlin,I shall be visiting.
I disagree with you re the RSPB.....when the only chance to go birding is to take the kids with you having visitor centre with shops, cafe and toilets is a great plus!

There is a RSPB survey here where you can tell them exactly what you'd like at the new reserve.........or not like! lol!

Pretty typical of the RSPB cant even get the name right its DOVESTONE all one word not Dove Stone . I can understand how handy a cafe and shop is in your case, but what I don't want is a situation like they ended up with at Old Moor RSPB. You cant get to the scrapes till they open the gates at 9.30 even though they are in there setting up the shop and cafe.

My lads are grown up and left home now so we don't require facilities any more tho it was a necessity when they were young if I was to get any birding done at all!
Agree re opening times.Conwy don't open till 10am.....but at least you can sneak in thru the back door, aka the river walk!

It looks to me as though they're just trying to cash in on a popular walkers spot. Like I have said Dovestones Reservoir itself doesn't hold much for the birdwatcher, its far to disturbed with the yacht club and the path around the edge which is well used by joggers, walkers, cyclists and dog walkers.
Its the out lying areas that hold the best for birders, the very areas they will probably want to try to "conserve" with fences that will be springing up with "authorized access only" all over the place.

Mmmm,I've got mixed feelings as if the fences/authorized access help preserve/encourage some birdlife it'll be worth it won't it?

The area seems to be doing fine right now, the only problem that I've heard being aired is the loss of the heather on the tops, but that is due to acid rain and plans are afoot to replant and reseed the worst areas. The areas that concern me most, where the birds are, is very little used (apart from Chew Piece Plantation) by anyone other than birdwatchers and a few of the more hardy ramblers, none of which should cause a problem to the birds. But the RSPB being the RSPB will want to act in some way to justify their presence, and I'm worried thats when the fences will start popping up.

I saw on North West TV about the heather problem and the way they are addressing it......fingers crossed that it's left in it's natural state by the RSPB.........time will tell eh.
