If their behaviour in Lancashire is anything like their behaviour in Somerset, the whole of the roost splits into small parties to feed (and whatever else a starling does with its day in the winter) during the day and then reassembles in increasingly bigger groups before joining the main roost at dusk.

I'd say that 15 is a pretty respectable tally for a group in a garden for any specific hour prior to the later assemblies!

We do feed extensively throughout the year at a number of feeding stations though which attracts birds in large numbers. For example we get through about 12.5 Kg of Sunflower hearts a week, and that is only one of nine different foodstuffs that we put out.
