I'm going to give the Wirral a few visits this winter, I've already asked Jonny74 for some good spots cos I've only ever been to Parkgate and Burton Marsh, not even been to Inner Marsh Farm yet.

A great photo of the snow Bunting, Merlin!
Sorry to hear of your recent episode with morons...sorry twitchers!

"Manners maketh man" they would do well to abide by this and learn some field etiquette at the same time.

Ironically that's where one of my encounters with the "twitchers" took place Merlin......you have been warned!! lol!!
It's a good spot for waders, tho there is only 1 hide.....and no loos!!!
Loads of info about the Wirral/Dee Estuary here Merlin.

Just goes to show, you get all sorts of folk in every hobby.

One thing I think we can be sure of is, no twitcher will be reading this thread.
I have no doubt they only visit forums in the hope of getting the nod on where the last rare bird was spotted, before they dash off in their Helicopter, to tick it.

If you ask me, they need a good Ticking Off!

Quite frankly though, being a loner myself, I've never understood this fascination for tramping around the countryside in large groups.

I don't want someone to point & say - Look there's such & such or so & so.
For me that takes ALL the thrill & fun out of seeing something a little unusual.

So much more exciting, don't you think to be just sitting their on your own, or ambling along & then spotting an unusual Bird, when you least expect it.

I saw Snow Bunting many times, in Speyside, but, like a previous poster, the last time I came across Snow Buntings, I was walking my dogs along a seaside path, with quite a few people around, when I came across a small group of them! I had to pinch myself.

That sort of memory stays with you for life!

On the other hand, I've completely forgotten about any birds anyone ever pointed out for me.

Cheers
Dick

Theres nothing like finding your own birds, I once had a free trial with Bird Guides and found it a very hollow experience to go to see whatever was texted to me of interest within my area. Needless to say I didn't take out a subscription.

It really depends what you want out of your birding, I like birding alone but also like helping out with groups and helping people with their ID. Finding your own birds is definately a better experience but I don't mind going to see birds or other wildlife when someone brings it to my attention, especially if it's nearby and a bird or animal I really want to see.
I help with our local SOC Grapevine and also receive sightings through my web site so I'm always getting reports sent to me, every now and then there is a bird I would like to see and I go out for a look, I have very limited free time so this can help to make the most of time I do have.
The Northern Bottlenose Whale was a perfect example, If I hadn't seen Ruth's post (thanx again) on here, I would have missed it and it was right outside my work.

cheers, John

John ... You should have gone to Specsavers!

But seriously, you are right of course, there is a place for beginners to be led by the nose & encouraged to get into Birdwatching, the easy way.

However, I can't understand why large groups of experienced Birdwatchers would ever want to go crashing through the undergrowth, together.
I personally find it very annoying & distracting if I have even one other person with me, especially if that person is a chatterbox!

Cheers
Dick
