Great video! As far as I know, crossbills can breed any time of year, whenever they choose to; end-of-year breeding (even 1st year birds) is not at all unusual. When they feel there's lots of food, they can breed. Fascinating but not really a sign of spring...

BUT: I heard great tits and coal tits singing their hearts out a couple of days ago. This means it IS officially spring.

My local council cut the grass in the park last week; I should have got a photo. Mind you there was a hard frost the next day.

Default mating peregrines

Last Friday (Jan 13th) I saw a pair of peregrines mate on the salt marsh just off the harbour mouth at Lymington in Hampshire.

All the song thrushes in this area are singing their heads off.

I heard a long tail tit singing it's head off in Sunderland yesterday.

I have been in greenhouse nearly all day, getting all the trays ready, all I could hear was robbins singing, pheshants alarm calling, when I looked outside flying over head a red kite, but by gum it's still cold enough to freeze a brass monkey. regards mac

I noticed today the bulbs are coming through, but I am afraid the bad stuff is still to come. Jim

I should hope so too - I think you'd even less comfortable if it was hot enough for the brass to melt

Not much sign of spring observed by me yet, though Great Crested Grebes were displaying a-plenty last weekend.
