Default Unusual Chiffchaff song?

I was walking the dog this evening and my attention was taken by a Chiffchaff calling. Each series of "Chiffchaff chicfchaff chaffchiff etc..." calls was followed by a series of five or six quiet chirrups a bit like a Whitethroat's crooning call. I could see the bird clearly, but have never heard this aspect of a chiffy's repertoire before. Any suggestions?

Like a lot of birds, they have different tones and songs
for different moods and times of day, some birds even
mimic what they have heard during the day.

Youngsters,as in last years birds, often seem to falter when trying out their voice for the first time in anger according to some of the ringers. There is also a slight variation in voices according to area a bit like human dialects.

Interesting Tony! I shall take more notice of my local chiffchaffs chiffing and a chaffing and see or hear of they add a note or two different!

Chiffchaffs usually do give these short, quite notes between the more typical 'Chiff chaff' calls, but you normally only hear them when you are very close.
