Default Swifts and Swallows

Hi all,

Is there a shortage of swifts and Swallows this year?

There are plenty of house martins this year. I've even got 2 pairs nesting on my house.

But I haven't seen a single swift or swallow at all this year.

I've lived in my house for over 20 years and have always seen plenty of swifts and Swallows until this year.

I live a bit north of Inverness.

Any thoughts?

Both are well down in numbers, and the swifts were a month late in arriving, the National federation of builders are trying to get new houses fitted with swift bricks, built in, but their numbers are well down, they have problems where they come from, and when they arrive here they are finding nest sites hard to find, they are such a specialised bird, been on the wing 24/7 they need certain kind of nest sites. We were up on holiday along the coast from you, and I think we only saw a couple of swifts.

We have a covered but open-ended passage down the side of our house, the back of which opens onto the garden and fields beyond. There are three separate Swallows' nests in this passage, and though each spring the birds prospect the sites, they don't always stay to breed though one year two of the nests fledged young, one in Spring, the other in September!!! This year looked like a blank, but last week a pair of Swallows set about repairing one of the nests, and now appear to be incubating eggs.

Looks like late fledging might be on the cards again this year...
