Default Bitterns still booming?

I spent a pleasant hour or so dodging midges at a local wetland reserve today, and am reasonably certain that I heard bitterns booming. I know they were present, as they live there all round and we were lucky enough to observe at least one in flight, but I hadn't counted on hearing them. All my books suggest they don't boom after April, but I'm convinced they're currently doing it in June. Has anyone else experienced this, or is it even fairly normal for the species?

Hi astafjevs

the latest I have heard of for Bittern's booming is the 12 June so you are certainly within the timescale on record. It's not a sound you can mistake for much else

cheers, John

Cheers John. I might well go back tomorrow and so I'll see if I can confirm it. Seems a little close to latest you mention though, but as you say its a distinctive sound! I was actually after hobbies and got bitterns instead, so if I go back listening for bitterns I should at least guarantee myself a hobby! (if only it worked like that!!)

Went back, they're still booming. Didn't actually see one today but did get my hobbies!
