RSPB Leighton Moss, Silverdale, Lancashire 2
Thought I'd spend a leisurely 5 hours or so this afternoon strolling around Leighton Moss - British Rail had other ideas. A simple 1hr 20min journey turned into 4hrs. I had to whizz round in 2 hours before my train home
Oh well, never mind. The reserve was as beautiful as ever. It was a lovely sunny afternoon, but very windy.
There were lots of Great Tits, Blue Tits, Chaffinches, Blackbirds, Greenfinches and the occasional Goldfinch along the paths and walkways. The lakes had the usual array of ducks, gulls and geese. There were masses of Coots - I've never seen so many in one place.
Of note, along the path to the public hide (for those that know it) was a Wasps nest. I would have walked right past it, if it wasn't for a helpful note from the RSPB saying ''CAUTION'' - Wasp Nest!!
I had no idea they used burrows in soil, and was fascinated watching them fly in and out.
Other treats were Lapwing, Cormorant and Bullfinches and several massive Black-tailed Skimmer's (thanks John for the ID on Tyson)
The star attraction for me though were 5 Little Egrets sat on an island of one of the lakes. These are a first for me, and I was able to sit quietly for a good 15 minutes just watching them - and taking bad photo's
before I had to leg it back to the station.
