Been staying up at Haverigg in Cumbria with family since the 27th December until yesterday. So i've been away from my computer hence my inactivity. But got a decent amount of birding time in especially around the RSPB reserve at Hodbarrow. The reserve is on the doorstep so I had a few nice early morning walks around there. There are quite a few duck of various species around there at the moment. With a few hundred Teal, Tufties, Pochard and Gadwall mixed together. There were the highlights as well including a single Scaup, at least 30 Goldeneye and quite good numbers of Eider on the sea. A big favorite of mine the Eider and always a joy to see them around Hodbarrow. Other Highlights of my week were a Red throated diver on the sea off Haverigg. Also a Woodcock I flushed walking through some woods. A nice big flock of Fieldfare feeding on berries around the reserve and a Marsh Tit on a feeder in somebody's garden. A nice week all in all with some lovely scenery around the Lakes and some nice birds to kick start my 2010 year list.

Thanks Ruth and Merlin for your comments. Was having a think about the reserve at Hodbarrow while I was up there Ruth. I think it could be a real birding gold mine if the RSPB took a little more time on it. It just seems like a reserve that is forgotten about. There is no real information centre just a board for sightings in the hide. You only have to look at the birds that regularly turn up round the corner at Walney to see Hodbarrow's potential. Plus I think it's an under watched area. But I still love it and maybe the RSPB will spend some more time and money on it in the future.

Sounds a great start to the year Jonny.

Having been to Hodbarrow early last year I know what you mean about the reserve - it's very exposed too, you must have been freezing!!
