A walk along the Caunsall stretch of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal was like a breath of fresh air on Saturday (24th) afternoon. The trees along the embankments were looking resplendent in their Autumnal colours, especially in the watery sunshine. Bird species seen were Great & Blue Tit, Long-tailed Tit, Robin, a flock of Siskin, Nuthatch, Blackbird, Mistle Thrush, Grey Wagtail, Jay, Green Woodpecker, Heron, Corvids, Buzzard and the highlight of the afternoon a perched female Kestrel! We had great views of her as she perched and scanned the vegetation around her looking for prey. After a while she dived from her perch in to the vegetation below but flew up and away with empty talons! They were the best views I have had of a Kestrel! Brill!!

Sunday afternoons walk was the Stourton to Kinver stretch of the canal, not as productive with birds as yesterday but still a pleasing walk! The highlight today being a couple of Buzzards with one being harrassed by a couple of Crows. L T Tit, Blue Tit, Wren, Dunnock, Goldfinch, Chaffinch and a Tawny Owl and G S Woodpecker heard. 2 Marsh Tits and a Goldcrest were seen but not by me, I had walked a little way ahead and missed them.

Nevertheless a great walk along a delightful stretch of the canal.

Many thanks for your kind comments, Ruth! The Kestrel did pose nicely, the best views I have ever had. Normally when I see them they are hovering or on telegraph wires! Nice to have good views of a Kestrel in natural surroundings!
A canal walk usually throws up something interesting and it is always a nice feeling to find your own birds!
