Paid a short visit to RSPB Sandwell Valley this afternoon. The alterations started at the end of January are still ongoing, a much larger carpark is still to be completed and the garden area is still under construction. It will certainly be a benefit when all alterations and refurbishments are complete. On the lake were Teal, Pochard, Wigeon, Gadwall, Shoveler, Oystercatcher, G C Grebe, Little Grebe, Shelduck, Coot, Moorhen and numerous B H Gulls. In the marsh area a common Snipe was spotted. At the feeding station were numerous Chaffinch and Greenfinch along with Bullfinch, House Sparrow, Reed Bunting, Robin and Woodpigeon. The sun shone brightly all afternoon but the wind made it feel really cold in the shade. No photographs unfortunately as the birds were well away from the hide and with the bright sunshine part of the lake was impossible to look at for long it was so glaring!

I was last there in January when the works had just started, Judith. The lakes were all but frozen and there was a layer of snow everywhere.

It sounds like you still managed a good visit. It's nice to read someone else's report that I can relate to and visualise the surroundings.
