Well, the blackcaps which frequented our garden all winter have disappeared, presumably into woodland where they normally live. Meanwhile, delighted to have daily visits from a great spotted woodpecker. He loves my homemade suet blocks (I've mixed in some grubs). Also doing our bit to help the sparrow population - we've at least a couple of dozen nesting in/near us and spending quite a lot of time on our feeders.
Can anyone identify a bird for us? We were walking onto Exmoor and saw a bird perhaps about the size of a greenfinch flying between gorse bushes. I got a quick glimpse with the binoculars and it seemed to an olive /brown with darker markings. Very hard to see in detail as it maintained a good distance from us.
Happy bird watching!

Nice to read of your bird visitors Maxine,I think your Exmoor bird could have been a Meadow Pipit?
Sorry to hear about your male Blackcap.........which I've just seen on your profile page.......their song is compared to a Nightingale, quite rightly too.........I hope the female will find another mate,I'm sure there's a good chance that she will at this time of the year.Posted 21-04-10 at 03:25 PM by Twitcheruth

Thanks so much for your replies and welcomes. I think you could be right about the meadow pipit. As for the blackcaps, I'm delighted to say that after a week of plaintive calling the female was joined in the garden by another striking male! Yes, an incredibly beautiful song. An honour to have had them in the garden. I've now put the 'birds of prey' stickers on all our windows to help prevent bird strikes. Still getting the wood pigeons flying into the windows - but they seem to bounce back OK - I'm hoping the smaller birds will be deterred.Posted 22-04-10 at 07:33 PM by Maxine
