Default Telephoto lens advise.

Presently use a canon 5D iii and a 70-200 f/2.8 is Mark ii with a x2 extender for nature / limited bird photography.
Bird photography mainly at a garden feeding station.
For some time I have been considering a used 500mm f/4 Mark 1, plenty available on eBay and many camera dealers.
I have actually located a new Mark 1 lens that was a customer return for a minor cosmetic Mark that has laid on a shelve unsold.
It's 3,900, a considerable saving on a new Mark 2 lens. Just asking what the experts on the forum think, is it a good price ? What about future repairs / servicing ?
I have budgeted for a Gitzo tripod and a Wimberley head as I believe they are a must have when using this beast of a lens.
I am in the north east near Middlebrough, is there any members using a 500mm lens local to me who could let me handle view their lens to give me a feel for the weight / size.
