I've been using a 40D for birding for a few weeks, some may think that I am mad when I say I got rid of one of my 1Dmk2s for it.
To me it has proved a good way to go, yes the focus is a little bit slower but apart from that it does well. I shoot in full raw, not sraw, and find the IQ to be better than the mk2 in that I either don't have to crop, due to the fov, or have to crop very little. I thought about the 50D but felt the file sizes for me were just a bit big and would have ment upgrading my PC which I didn't want to do at the moment. Most of the time I use it with a canon 300 f4, with and without a TC. I would say to anyone looking for a good camera at a good price for bird photography, the 40D will serve you well. I've attached two shots taken with the 40D and 300mm f4. Iain. |

I have just aquired a 40D and have found it a superb camera. The auto focussing is great and the image quality is also a leap forward from the 20D.
I use it with my Sigma 300mm f/2.8 lens with a 1.4 convertor; I find it a good combination cheers, John
