Default Planting for Birds...

I hope this is in the right section... I did a search but couldnt find a specific thread so,

We have a flower bed about 25 feet long, 5 feet deep., running along the side of a privet hedge.
It is shady till about noon-ish, then in full sun till sunset. Quite hard, clay like soil.

Apart from a few grasses the bed is pretty empty.

We want to attract as many birds as possible (of course) so therefore thinking about what are the best plants to put in.

We started with a few obvious 'Hebe' today, but any suggestions would be more than welcome

I don't know the first thing about gardening because I haven't got a garden but any future garden of mine will have teasels for goldfinches and fruit and berry trees for winter thrushes (and waxwings and blackcaps if I'm lucky).

If the garden isn't big enough for trees they'll be in pots.

I use to have red hot pokers in my garden, not sure if thats the correct name.
The birds loved eating their seeds....
