Default Pure Enjoyment

I am new to this and live fortunately in a rural garden surrounded by woodland. Anyway i have a couple of things to tell you.Firstly i saw my first pair of Bullfinches today simply beautiful and unmistakable in appearance. Secondly i have a pair of songthrushes feeding from my feeding station no more than three metres from my small conservatory or birdling spy station as i like to call it...lol They come regularly and are not bothered by me or my wife being there looking at them at all.

Now also my exciting bit of news i was sitting there in my conservatory watching out onto the garden and my feeders. Just to the left of my view is my little garden shed its literally outside my back garden door. I was watching female chaffinch having been on the feeder disappeared between my shed and cottage then the chaffinch reappeared on top of my shed then all of a sudden from behind and above my head came this hawk attempting to take this chaffinch from my shed roof.

Wow i said it did actually hit this bird I'm sure such was the swiftness and hee looked back at me as he flew off but im pretty sure he didn't take this finch with him but it was a near miss. I could at the final moment hear his flight and attempt to snatch himself a meal from my shed roof. You could hear the woosh as he swooped in. I was only feet away how lucky was i to see such a thing so close.Well that is my day today but i shall go to sleep a happy bunny today, Thanks for reading and i look forward to any of your thoughts on this. Just in case you ask i think it was a sparrowhawk but not 100 percent.

Regards

Default Possible Sparrowhawk

Hi Paul, Thanks for the interesting post. It sounds from your behavioural description that it was a Sparrowhawk.

Whenever I've seen them they are carrying out an ambush of a small garden bird.

Once I was cycling along admiring a Robin sitting in the hedgerow singing away, when suddenly, swoop, a Sparrowhawk swept down and snatched the poor thing!
