Default Unusual?

This swallow pair have decided to build right out in the open. I have been aware of a dispute between him/her and another pair who have occupied the barn successfully, but I have never seen an exposed swallow nest like this

How lovely to have great views of Swallows nesting. I suppose they will nest wherever there is an opportunity.

I've been staying down near Nottingham for the last 10 days or so, and walking the dog in the woodland created on the site of the former Silverhill colliery. I was surprised one morning to see squadrons of House Martins hawking insects through the trees. On topic, is this unusual? I've never seen/noticed it before.
