I'm going for 1st summer herring, 2nd summer GBB.

My guides don't go into much detail on non-adult gulls, but I reckon both birds are paler than I'd expect them to be in winter. The herring has no grey, indicating it's not yet reached its 2nd winter, whereas the 2nd bird has a pure white head rather than a streaked one that it'd have in winter.

I bet I'm wrong on both!!

Question ID Quiz

A bit easier...

...yeah right!

I'll go for...

1: Second-winter Herring Gull
2: Second-winter Great Black-backed Gull

I don't think I've every paid so much attention to these kind of gulls!

You all got the two species no problem, the Herring Gull is a 1st winter bird.
The second bird is a 3rd winter Great Black-backed Gull.

cheers, John
