Thanx for that, I've never seen a woodcock either.
Shows how much I know. I was told by a bloke that I took as an experienced birder that it was a snipe.
Do snipe and woodcock have similar flight ?

They have a slightly similar flight but diffferent enough to be obvious to an experienced birder, they are much bulkier and broader winged birds, snipe would have a pale belly and dont have the extensive barring on body and wings so obvious on this bird, also if you look carefuly just behind the eye, you can see the vertical stripes on the crown which snipe do not have

Thanx, John. I think it must have been two different birds. The first one was on one side of the mere and this was on the other. TBH I didn't think of woodcock, I just looked at the bill.
