I have always used Opticron binoculars and have never had a problem. They are a good honest British company that price their binoculars and scopes sensibly. Last year I decided to buy a new pair and was considering Leica or Swarovski but after comparing them with Opticron Imagic BGA SE at the bird fair I just couldn’t justify their over inflated price. The Opticrons were every bit as good, crystal clear at all distances and light and well made to boot, plus Imagics are not even top of the Opticron range.
You can see their range here.

I`ve just got a pair of the Discovery WP PC 8x42. They retail at £159 and i most say they are a great pair for anyone just starting out and on a tight budget. They are gas filled and weatherproof with a magnesium body for stength and low wieght. They come with rainguard cover for the eyepieces which is handy. The image quality is great concidering the price. Sharp even at the edges with good colour and contrast even in low light. The focus ring is smooth. They are about the fourth pair of binoclular`s i have owned and think it will be a while before i even think about replacing them. I bought them to replace my meade bak4 10x50`s as they are not waterproof and do tend to fog up on damp days . cheers Paul

Just road tested mine today at Bempton Cliffs. I simply cannot fault them! easy to track birds in flight and keep in focus. They just ooze quality for the £123 I paid new from ebay seller.

I've just bought a pair of 10 x 42 Verano BGA Oasis. Took me three visits to In Focus to make up my mind, first that the Verano's were what I wanted and second, whether to go for the 8s or the 10s. Eventually I chose the 10s as I won't be carrying a scope for a while.

My initial impression is that they are a lovely glass, and well worth the price (£299 from In Focus). I'm off to Walton on the Naze on Saturday with the local RSPB group so they'll get a good workout. I'll post a more detailed assessment after the weekend.

Well the sun shone, the wind blew and for a few minutes, the rain rained. But the Walton trip was enjoyable even if the wind ensured a dearth of passerines to point my new bins at.

To be fair, this probably wasn't the fairest test for my new Veranos; it was a day for waders, and one where big scopes came into their own. Most of the day was spent looking at birds that were just too far away for a pair of 10x40s to show adequately. Nevertheless I am very pleased with them. The image brightness is excellent, as is the colour transmission. Focussing is very crisp. And having tried them both with and without gloves I can report that handling is equally good either way. This last is partly down to the oversized focussing wheel and partly to the 'open' design; these bins are a two-hinge design with space for fingers between the hinges, rather like the Swarovski. My biggest problem with them was the objective glass covers; they are each retained on the instrument by a soft plastic ring which fits around the objective end of the glass and looking through the bins it was impossible to stop them blowing around in the field of vision. Not wanting to lose them I was loath to take them off, but did eventually and stuffed them into a pocket until the trip home.

I'm looking forward to trying them in slightly more favourable circumstances; a walk across Wimbledon Common maybe, or a trip to WWT at Barnes. But on my experience so far, I can wholeheartedly recommend them as a very good performer in their price range, and probably for some way above it.

Totally agree with paul2009 as I have just bought a pair of Opticron Discovery WP PC 8x42. The image quality is far better than I expected. Used them for the first time today (2 Jan 2011) at WWT, Llanelli and was pleased to see a Peregrin anoying a flock of lapwing. I am well pleased with my purchase.
