RSPB Ynis-Hir,Powys,Wales.
As we drove through the reserve to the car park I could already hear the Wood Warblers singing!! We jumped out of the car and back tracked a little way and stopped and listened again.....then a flutter and there he was, feathers shivering as he delivered his wonderful song.....my first ever Wood Warbler.....& a wonderful start to our visit! The reserve itself is sited on the saltmarsh of the River Dyfi and amongst broad leaf woodlands so there is quite a variety of species to be seen. The visitor centre put me in mind of an African lodge with a wide, shaded veranda overlooking a metre long feeder and in the distance the river and the mountains beyond. After an early start and a 2 hour drive we sat here with a much needed coffee before exploring the reserve itself. The tree top hides in particular are wonderful with stunning views as well as an eye to eye insight of the birds in the canopy! We had an amazing day and would certainly recommend it for a wonderful day out! Thanks to Jonny for the info in his blog that inspired my hubby to take me away for the weekend.... spent at a converted Water Mill B&B,relaxing to the sound of a tinkling waters, bird song and watching Dippers feed while eating our own full Welsh breakfast! Thanks Peter,Alan,Amanda and Judith!
Yes you can see Aberdovey from one of the treetop hides Judith.....a nice place,I remember it too from bucket and spade hols with the lads! ![]() We'll definitely be going back to Ynis-hir.....as we only did half of it in almost 7 hours there!! Mind we were trying to avoid the sun by keeping to the woodland areas......as it attracts good numbers of Barnacle and White-fronted Geese in the Autumn months.....so an excuse for a re-visit then sometime!
