Default Fenn's and Whixall Moss NNR, Shropshire.

Took a trip to Whixall moss today after reading so many good stories about the place. And I would have to point out for anyone who wishes to see hunting Hobbies this is by far the best place i've ever been for them. I had 4 Hobbies hunting dragonfly in the air at once, a truly spectacular sight.
And for anyone interested in Dragonfly id then this place is a must visit. I think I counted at least 6 different species. And there was probably an awful lot more as I am no expert. It's also a good place for Cuckoo although I had no luck today. And there are also Nightjar on the moss but I didn't stay long enough to hear or see them.
There is plenty of other species of bird including Buzzard, Kestrel, Stonechat, Meadow pipit, Reed Bunting, Curlew and at least 6 species of warbler. There were also large numbers of both Swift and Swallow so more food for the Hobbies. There was also plenty of butterflies as well.
But this place is worth the visit just simply to watch the arial acrobatics of the Hobby

How wonderful to have the pleasure of watching four Hobbys, Jonny! Something really special watching them hunting for Dragonflies etc! It does sound a special reserve and one I feel sure one you will be visiting again!

That is a good link you have added, Ruth!
