Default Birds I'd like to see

My house backs onto woodland but the trees are fairily young under 30 years old - older woodland is about a mile away (actually it's an area of special scientific interest - The Gosforth NAture Reserve as owned by the Natural History Soc of Northumbria).

I am sure there must be woodpeckers in my immediate area but have never seen one - is there anything in particular I can do to attract them to my feeder?

Also if I want to go and find owls are pellets on the ground the only indication? It may sound silly but what are the best ways of picking them out? Is it just luck. With this bird watching thing I have learnt that I need to know what I am trying to see.
