Default lJames Hamilton heritage Loch, East Kilbride

This is a great Birding spot for sure, it is always rather busy with people and Birds, best to go on a chilly day when there are no people out on boats, the Birds are often more relaxed.
Located on the North Western fringe of East Kilbride this is perhaps more of a visitors atrraction than a wildlife haven at times!
Was there on Tuesday, Little Grebe, various Gulls, Tufted Duck, Mallard Duck, Mute Swan, Feral Pigeon, Jackdaw, Rook, Grey Heron, Coot, Moorhen & Lapwing are all residing there at present, rather large flock of Lapwing too, although I reckon they are migrating so may not hang around long.

Fantastic place for some good spots, can often find Cormorant there in summer too.

RE: James Hamilton Heritage Park

Hi Eric

The Heritage Park is a great place to go but as you say better when its cold and chilly, less people about.

The Lapwing winter there, they roost on the island at night and are usually there unless the water freezes over. In the winter its always worth a look for Iceland and Glaucous Gulls among the other gulls, I have seen both at the same time there, have also seen Scaup, Pintail, Wigeon, Water Rail as well as the commoner birds there. Maybe see if we can arrange a walk around it at some point, I have a key for the hide at the pools as well so if your interested we can sort something out

Cheers, John

Below are some images I have taken there.

Hey John,
Definately, I've never noticed any of the more interesting Gulls there myself but I'm still not entirely sure how to differentiate between them.

I'm glad to hear the Lapwing overwinter there, I think they are perhaps my favourite Bird species & once I have gotten my SLR camera I shall definately return!

You have a Key to the hut? I've always been interested to know what it is like in there and get some photos etc from there so I shall definately take you up on that offer!

Great photos, the Snape are fantastic, I've never seen these before, are they there often or was that a surprise spot?

cheers,
Erik

Hi Eric

The Snipe are there most of the winter but easier to see in October/November and March/April. The hide is good but not particularly great when the vegetation starts growing. I usually use it when its raining or to stop to eat my lunch in peace

cheers, John

Hey John,
Yes It really does get busy there, Very irritating indeed.
I've never caught sight of the Snipe before, although i've never actively looked for them, always thought they would be much, much too secretive to come to so busy a place.

Well the Lapwing are gone but as the lake is frozen the birds are right close to the edge - makes photographty quite easy haha.
Tufted Duck, Black Headed Gull, Mute Swan, Mallard Duck, Herring, Lesser Black-Backed Gull & Little Grebe are all present - fantastic!
