This was my first visit since 01/03/2014 and I must admit that hardly anything had changed, arrived around 09.30am with the Stourbridge RSPB Local Group.

The weather was dry and quite mild to begin with but changed to much cooler later in the day, but this didn’t stop my enjoyment of the day.

On to the birding for the day started by heading towards the Church Pond this is on the right sided path from the main visitor’s car park and on the left as you head towards the Church.

This can be a great pool to start with and today was no different with great views of Goldeneye and Pochard, I saw at least 5 male and 7 female Goldeneye with 14 Pochard males and at least 16 females scattered over the pond but they were very mobile.

I then moved onto take the Tufted Duck Trail this incorporated the following pool/ponds Church, Tween & Clifton and the following areas Wheatear Field, River Trent and WEST Marsh Path.

Out and about around the for m0entioned areas I got views of Redwing, Fieldfare, Little Egret & Sparrowhawk which was making the birds on the Clifton pond scatter on quite a few occasions.

Had great views of a Mandarin Duck female just by the visitor centre on the Coneries Pond also in this area I saw 2 species of Hybrid goose both Domestic on hybrid was with a Barnacle and the other Greylag in my opinion.

Now onto the reserve itself many areas must cleared recently by the look of the dead ended reeds and scrub also they have the main Tower Hide under some sort of refurbishment as they have scaffolding around the outer side and you must use this area to get into the hide, so I should imagine something is wrong with the original stairs to the hide.

SPECIES SEEN TODAY –

Black headed gull, Blackbird, Blue tit, Bullfinch, Canada goose, Carrion crow, Cetti’s warbler, Collared dove, Common gull, Coot, Cormorant, Dunnock, Egyptian goose, Fieldfare, Goldcrest, Goldeneye, Goldfinch, Goosander, Great black backed gull, Great crested grebe, Great spotted woodpecker, Great tit, Greenfinch, Grey heron, Greylag goose, Herring gull, Lapwing, Lesser black backed gull, Little egret, Little grebe, Long tailed tit, Magpie, Mallard, Mandarin duck, Moorhen, Mute swan, Pied wagtail, Pochard, Redwing, Robin, Shelduck, Sparrowhawk, Stock dove, Teal, Tufted duck, Wigeon, Wood pigeon & Wren

Default My Garden Watch List 29 12 2017

I eventually got around to doing a garden watch this morning from 07.45am until 08.30am due to deteriating weather conditions, clear skies to start with at 07.45am then mist and low cloud moving in making it a bit of a no goer but here are the species seen this morning

Blackbird, Robin, Black headed gull (over around 30+), Blue tit, Lesser black backed gull (over around 15), Carrion crow, Chaffinch, Wren, Meadow pipit (over x2), Wood pigeon, House sparrow, Herring gull (over), Dunnock, Magpie, Great tit, Goldfinch, Bullfinch, Long tailed tit, Redwing (over), Jay, Coal tit, Nuthatch & Starling.

Great black backed gull (over) this bird was spotted among a mixed flock of Lesser black backed and Herring gulls as it was much larger than the rest of the birds in the flock.

A single Tufted duck flew over heading towards Wassel Grove Fish Ponds, the gulls seem to be flying from the Bartley Reservoir did notice one of the birds appeared to be completely white but in these conditions, it could be the light playing tricks.

Will try and do another garden watch later in the week with photographs I hope as the light was to bad today, also hoping to do Upton Warren and Rutland this week.

What a surprise the day after the RSPB Garden Birdwatch some species from yesterdays watch turn up first thing they were -

Greenfinch, Great spotted woodpecker, Green woodpecker, Grey heron, Sparrowhawk, Goldcrest, Fieldfare Collared dove, Jackdaw, Song thrush & Buzzard.

Other than this this mornings species seen were -

Blue tit, Great tit, Bullfinch, Goldfinch, House sparrow, Lesser black backed gull, Wood pigeon, Redwing, Black headed gull, Robin, Dunnock, Wren, Magpie, Jay, Carrion crow, Herring gull, Coal tit, starling, Long tailed tit, Nuthatch & Chaffinch

This was a great morning for garden watching with no one walking the field at the bottom of the garden hence more species around.

Rutland water cancelled this weekend will be doing Upton Warren instead due to transport problems
