Default Rodbaston - animal zone & world owl trust 11 - 03 - 2017

This was my first visit to this small collection, arrived after a train (Birmingham New Street to Stafford and then bus (58) dropped off right at the end of the drive leading to the collection.

After a small walk, up the drive the entrance is though the tea rooms and as I thought it was a very small collection with small enclosures but still quite capable of holding the species within them in comfort.

Highlights of the collection included Racoon, Honey bear, Lesser blue eared glossy starling and the Brahminy mynah, the collection also holds some of the Owls waiting to be rehomed at Himley (World Owl Trust) in around 12 months’ time yet I really enjoyed the species they had on show.

The highlights from the Owl Collections were the Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, Pharoh Owl, Black Barred Owl and of course the only one in captivity in the world the ETHIOPIAN EAGLE OWL.

SPECIES SEEN TODAY –

(please note these are not ALL the species the collection holds as other species may be off show)

African spotted eagle owl, Ashy faced owl, Barn owl, Bcheno or Double barred finch, Black barred owl, Black crowned night heron, Brahminy mynah, Burrowing owl, Cattle egret, Chaco owl, Demioselle crane, Diamond dove, Ethiopian eagle owl, European eagle owl, Ferruginous pygmy owl, Gouldian finch, Great grey owl, Great horned owl, Indian eagle owl, Laughing kookaburra, Lesser blue eared glossy starling, Mottled owl, Northern hawk owl, Oriental bay owl, Pharaoh’s eagle owl, Red billed blue magpie, Red breasted goose, Sacred ibis, Scarlet ibis, Snowy owl, Sunda scops owl, Swainson’s parakeet, Tawny owl, Tengmalm’s owl, Ural owl, Western screech owl, White cheeked turaco & White faced scops owl

Default Burton mere rspb 19 - 03 - 2017

Arrived around 09.45am on a very damp and blustery morning, first visit for a while and hoping to return in November this year again with the local RSPB group from Stourbridge.

Not too much report from the reserve due to the weather being very blustery especially overlooking the Estuary from the viewing point over the Railway bridge at the end of the reserve but we did manage to see a Great White Egret for a few minutes before we gave up with the wind making it impossible to keep either the scopes or the binoculars steady.

Onto what was around the rest of the reserve yes there were a few waders but all were taking cover from the showers and the wind they were Redshank, Spotted Redshank, Ruff, Dunlin and Curlew other than this not too much else except the usual suspects.

SPECIES SEEN –

Blackbird, Blue tit, Herring gull, Sparrowhawk, Canada goose, Carrion crow, Magpie, Wood pigeon, Chaffinch, Starling, Song thrush, House sparrow, Pied wagtail, Rook, Pheasant, Mute swan, Tufted duck, Mallard, Coot, Black tailed godwit, Avocet, Oystercatcher, Little grebe, Peregrine falcon, Black headed gull, lapwing, Redshank, Spotted redshank, Curlew, Shoveler, Teal, Moorhen, Wigeon, Pintail, Common gull, Little egret, Shelduck, Great white egret, Skylark, Chiffchaff, Dunlin, Kestrel, Ruff, Lesser black backed gull, Cormorant, Robin, Dunnock, Wren, Gadwall, Greylag goose &, Grey wagtail

Default Park gate rspb - 19 - 03 - 2017

This is one of my favourite places to visit, I know it’s just a short walk along the high street with the houses, shops, hotels, pubs & food outlets on one side and on the other Marsh land and small pools leading on to the Estuary but still a great variety of Bird species from Linnet to Hen Harrier.

Up until around 15.30 we only saw the usual suspects but in the next 15 minutes we had a great view of a Marsh Harrier over the March with a Merlin flying low over the undergrowth, then to top it a female Hen Harrier in the distance this on top of a Kestrel showing well for the photographers in the group and at the last minute before the rain set in we saw a Buzzard so a great Birds of prey day was had by all.

SPECIES SEEN –

Little egret, Black headed gull, Lesser black backed gull, Feral pigeon, Greylag goose, Pink footed goose, Canada goose, Carrion crow, Mallard, Teal, Moorhen, Redshank, Starling, Wood pigeon, Kestrel, Curlew, Grey heron, Cormorant, Chaffinch, Mistle thrush, Fieldfare, Linnet, Jay, Meadow pipit, Redwing, Oystercatcher, Goldfinch, Blue tit, Merlin, Marsh harrier, Hen harrier, Buzzard & Great black backed gull

Will be updating my garden watch updates shortly

Default Titchfield haven nature reserve - 23 - 04 - 2017

My first visit to this location and again with the Stourbridge Local RSPB Group, left Stourbridge at 07.00am on a quite mild and dry morning traffic was a lot quieter than we all expected so arrived much quicker than we thought.

We had a little walk to the reserve as the coach couldn’t park up any closer to the reserve but wasn’t too far away, walked along the estuary front to start with and had great views of Turnstone* and a Mute Swan in the small harbour type area.

Walking along the front towards the main reserve entrance (from off the front that is) not too much to report although we did have a couple of Sandwich Tern fly over our heads just before the gate to enter the reserve.

On the reserve, itself I found it to be a very interesting place as they have different types of habitat and a few hides to give great views of the open water areas.

I did manage to get a couple of year ticks for Butterflies these being Peacock & Speckled wood also seen were Small White, Brimstone, Holly blue and Large Tortoiseshell.

Now on to the birds seen today these included year ticks of Common Tern, Sedge warbler, Common Sandpiper, Whitethroat, Mediterranean gull at least (10 if not more on the reserve), Dunlin, Eider duck, Sanderling, Garden Warbler & Reed bunting overall a great day out.

SPECIES SEEN TODAY –

Avocet, Black headed gull, Black tailed godwit, Blackbird, Blue tit, Buzzard, Canada goose, Carrion crow, Cetti’s warbler, Chiffchaff, Collared dove, Common sandpiper, Common snipe, Common tern, Coot, Curlew, Dunlin, Dunnock, Eider duck, Gadwall, Garden warbler, Goldfinch, Great black backed gull, Great tit, Herring gull, House sparrow, Jackdaw, Lapwing, Lesser black backed gull, Linnet, Little grebe, Long tailed tit, Magpie, Mallard, Meadow pipit, Mediterranean gull, Moorhen, Mute swan, Oystercatcher, Pheasant, Pied wagtail, Red kite, Robin, Rook, Sanderling, Sandwich tern, Sedge warbler, Shelduck, Shoveler, Skylark, Song thrush, Starling, Stock dove, Teal, Tufted duck, Turnstone, Whitethroat, Wood pigeon & Wren

Default Slimbridge WWT 25 - 04 - 2017

Arrived around 10.45am with Group Travel this was my third trip with Group Travel on a chilly but dry morning so hopes were high for something good, Black winged stilt’s had been on the reserve for a few days prior to my visit but to cut a long story short I dipped on these birds today.

This didn’t deter me from having a great day though today’s highlights as always were the Common Cranes showing well again just 2 birds seen today but that’s enough for a quality bird species no matter what it is.

Other than the above there were just the usual suspects around but must admit all giving great views, will be returning soon with the family so hoping for better luck with something rare on this visit.

SPECIES SEEN TODAY –

Blackbird, Robin, Blue tit, Carrion crow, Chaffinch, Dunnock, Wood pigeon, Lesser black backed gull, Collared dove, Long tailed tit, Pheasant, Magpie, Jackdaw, Buzzard, Starling, Great tit, House sparrow, Rook, Black headed gull, Avocet, Greylag goose, Canada goose, Mute swan, Tufted duck, Shelduck, Shoveler, Kingfisher, Swallow, Little gull, Black tailed godwit, Wigeon, Ruff, Lapwing, Teal, Sedge warbler, House martin, Goldfinch, Common crane, Herring gull, Meadow pipit, Wren, Song thrush, Curlew & Gadwall
