Default Birding on Islay

We are hoping to visit at least one of the islands off the West coast of Scotland later on this year, probably late September, and wondered if anyone had experience of birding on Islay. Our main target birds will be raptors but of course sea birds will be high on the list as well as Choughs. I know Mull is great for Eagles but maybe a little commercial now. Any suggestions on Islay and other islands will .be appreciated

Islay is a lovely island it holds some of the best antlered stags in
this country getting up to Royal emperor with 26 point.
The mull of Oa is great for Eagles, sanaigmore is good for chough
loch Gruinard is good for wildfowl in the autumn. And a visit to
the Bowmore distillery is a must. The only downside is the cost of the ferry.
If you have a car the ferry over to Jura is well worth it the paps are
spectacular, it also has a large population of both Deer & Adders.
I hope you enjoy we camped there many years ago.

Thanks for that info Alan,I think most ferry crossings will be pricey. No chance of us camping nowadays nothing less than bricks and mortar and a comfy bed. No doubt the distillery tours will be on the plan I mean we have to support local industries !!

Sorry I forgot to mention, you say you are going the end of
September, unfortunately the Merlin, Hen Harriers, and
Short eared owls may well have left.Like a lot of the
Islands June July is the prime time. Don't know
where you are staying but the main Pub in
Port Ellen, was run by an ex policeman
from Glasgow, who was shot and he was
sent to police home near you
in Harrogate,he was called called Drew.
