I visited Martin Mere Wetland Centre last weekend and over the two days I had some wonderful sightings and also heard some wonderful sounds! Namely thousands of Pink-footed Geese coming in to roost and also a Starling roost! Big numbers of Teal, Wigeon, Mallard, Shelduck, Pintail, Shoveler, Gadwall, Tufted Duck, Pochard, Marsh Harrier, Sparrowhawk were the highlights and a Merlin at Marshside was a treat to see.

I have just read on the WWT website that the closing time has been extended from 4.30pm to 5.30pm for those who wish to view the Starling roost that now has approximately 50,000 Starlings coming in to roost. Viewing is from the Harrier Hide. We viewed the roost from the roadside, a pity the reserve hadn't stayed open later last weekend for the roost. Still good viewing nonetheless.

Martin Mere is a great place for watching waterfowl in winter to watch the geese come in late afternoon is s great sight.. The great number of birds usually draws in some raptors looking for an easy meal. I am some happy with the permrnant collection that you have to walk past, bit like a zoo in my opinion, but that is just my thoughtd
