Default Hi Everyone

Hi there, I live in Chester and I'm very new to birdwatching, I only really got into it last year (2010) when i got a fantastic set of binoculars for my birthday. I'm desperate to see waxwings and know they have been spotted in Cheshire but if anyone has a location i would be very grateful. I also need advice on how to reduce Starling numbers in my garden! I know this may be controversial but they are stripping my feeders and preventing the smaller birds from getting to them.

Hi Fergi, welcome to the forum. I've had the same problem with larger birds hogging the feeders so I've made a table with a 2" mesh surround to only allow robin sized and smaller getting in. The feeders are hung inside.

Thanks Peter, I had a look at specific feeders yesterday and they are very expensive so I tried one of those small bird feeders but this morning I saw 2 starlings on it so that obviously doesn't work!

Welcome to the Forum Fergie!

I hope you have found a solution to your greedy Starlings problem but do leave a feeder of some sorts for them to feed from, they have to eat too!

Enjoy your birding in 2011 and I hope you get or have got your Waxwings!

Judith

Feeders are ridiculous prices, especially in garden centres.

Wilkinsons are selling these for £9.99 so I got one to try. It's a little lightweight but easy to dismantle for cleaning. Should be Starling and Squirrel proof.

That looks a good buy Peter! Do let us know if it is squirrel proof please. I have found the only squirrel proof solution for my feeders is a squirrel baffle.

It should be but time will tell. I don't have any in the garden at the moment, not seen them since summer.
