It's not often you get a text message telling you that a species has hatched in the UK for the first time in 177 years. But that's exactly what happened to me this week and the species is the huge, flamboyant,
great bustard.
Half way into this year's Springwatch, the timing couldn't have been better.

The best name the
Mole can come up with is "Jumbo" - a reference to its status as one of the heaviest flying birds in the world, but surely we can do a bit better than that?
The favourite name will be chosen by David Waters, whose team's tireless efforts at the
Great Bustard Project have been rewarded with the first great bustard hatching in the UK for 177 years.
