Default Isle of Mull, home now

Hi Guys,

Off to the Isle of Mull in a few weeks for a weeks holiday. We want to pack as much in as possible to our holiday.

Can anyone recommend places to go and things to see. I know its packed with birds and wildlife, that's the reason we are going. The place we are renting you can see the white tailed sea eagles from the front door, so really excited about that.

Hoping someone knows of some secret little places to visit etc.

Many thanks

Lynne

I went two years ago and this island is responsible for getting me back into birdwatching again, you must visit Grasspoint which is just south of Lochdon you will see sign post, this is where i saw my first Hen Harrier and White tailed sea Eagle. You should also visit Ulva island plenty to see and the Boathouse served excellent seafood when we were there, also the Eagle viewing hidehttp://www.white-tailed-sea-eagle.co.uk/sea-eagle-hide.htm we never went to this because we had a dog with us, but i found out dogs are allowed.Enjoy the Island it it fantastic, stay on deck on the ferry as there could be Basking Sharks about too.

Its nice to take a drive around the island as there are plenty of little bays which sometimes hold Great northern, Black throated and Red throated diver. Also look around the higher ground around Glen more for Golden eagle, Hen Harrier, Merlin and Short eared owl. Loch na keal can be a great place to see Slavonian grebes as well although I'm not sure if they are back from breeding this time of year.
A fantastic place to be spending a holiday I'm jealous, have a great time

Red face isle of mull

Hi everyone, this is my first post, and what a place to start, I have been going for over forty years on the island, my main aim was studying the raptors, but my main love is the golden eagle, I was one of the firsat to find the first pair of breeding sea eagles in the late 70s, infact I have a white tail feather from the female, the island is a real stunner, having walked nearly every hill it was like saying good bye to a family member, but I have not been back for five years, unfortunatly things have been happening on the island which has been kept quite, but the sea eagle are bringing in the money, but at what expence. will hopefully learn a lot on here, all the best Mac:

Unhappy Home now

Went to Mull, must say WHAT a place, didn't want to leave.

Stayed on the south west of the island, place called Scoor House.

Saw lots of wildlife, went on one of the guided tours, wish we had done that on 1 of the 1st days, we would of known the best places then lol oh well. On the tour at lunch time, we sat out in a grassy area with a waterfall to the side, and a golden eagle above us was brilliant, he flew around then went and sat in the same place. There was a herd of red deer on the sky line, stag was there too. Had a really good day out, all the people on the tour all after the same thing. Really nice chatting to others, was on the tour from 9am - 6pm well worth it.

We saw on the tour and just on our own,

Golden Eagles
White Tailed Sea Eagles
Lots of herons
Many different gulls
Hooded crows
Buzzards
Hen Harriers, they was on the private road to the house, didn't manage any pics though
Mountain Hare
Godwits
Seals, common and grey
Dolphins, hiding on the pic lol
Otters, well I didn't but others did typical
Red deer galore, was right next to the house every night and morning
Lizards
Toads
Crabs
Red Kite on the way to Mull
Highland Cattle
Pigs
Sheep, sheep and more sheep
Loads af little birds, like the robins, chaffinch, wagtails etc.

Will update list if I remember anything else.

Had a fantastic time, took a trip to the sea eagle hide, really enjoyed it but didnt see a thing
Planning on going again early next year, back to the same place.
Tried to cover the whole Island, we also went to Ulva, lovely place and the food at the boathouse was superb, just didn't realise there was so much on the Island, would definitely spend a full day there next time.
Didn't manage to get to Iona or any of the other Islands but I am sure we will fit them in next time.
Where we stayed was ideal, seemed most of the wildlife was concentrated in the south west of the Island, so next time we will be better prepared.

Well that's about it really, if I think of anything will add later.
Some pics are better than others, was just glad I saw everything I wanted, photos were an added bonus.

Wish we could do a month there instead of a week!
