Hi i still think the seal is a common harbour seal, greys dont normaly come down as far as the whitby area, staying mainly around the farnes. regards mac

I would also tend to favour Common/Harbour Seal for this one - not because I don't think that Grey Seals would be seen in the area, but because to me the profile of the head looks more like the 'concave' profile of Common Seal (not easy to judge from the angle in the photo though).

Both seal species can be seen anywhere along the UK coasts, with Greys breeding south of Whitby at Donna Nook, north Lincolnshire, as well as on the Farnes to the north.
The nearest seal colony to Whitby is a Common Seal colony in Teesmouth, but Grey Seal is still a possibility.
