A real glut of Speckled Woods in the "natural" area of the local park today. They seemed to be everywhere.

The fine weather over the last few days has brought out the butterflies in the garden, including 2 firsts:

Brimstone - first in garden
Painted Lady - first in garden
Red Admiral
Peacock
Small Tortoiseshell
Meadow Brown
Speckled Wood

Good to read the updates on this thread.

A super selection you saw Ian. Great that you have two firsts for your garden.

Painted Lady I have yet to see this year.

We had our first Clouded Yellow on a recent trip to Kent, what a stunning

butterfly red on top and yellow underneath, I sent it to the ranger who put it forward for a competition.

I know the weather's been unusual this year, but I'm at a loss to explain why this morning, when it was both very windy and very cold, we had a Peacock butterfly on the wing in the garden. Can't remember ever seeing any butterfly this late in the year.

I bet it wished it had stayed low Tony! Maybe it was looking for a cosy shed to hunker down for the winter in?

Taken from UK Butterflies: Adults may be seen at any time of the year, with warm weather waking them from hibernation.
