Nice shots Mike.
I'm going to put the cat amongst the pigeons here.....I think your Grebe is a winter plumaged Slavonian Grebe. Too much black on the face for a Great Crested and the body colour is wrong.

It's definately a Great crested Grebe in winter plumage.

Slavonian Grebes have a flatter head, a black, stubbier bill and don't have the black line from the bill to the eye and the crest would come down to just below the eye line.

trust me, it's a great crested, WRONG: size,eye colour,throat colour,neck length,head shape.
