Note no white eye-ring, browny upper parts, no white belly, rules out Green Sand, This bird also is a Redshank, Juv going into Winter plumage.

Hi Mike

I don't think the second image is a Redshank, I think the white belly is below the water. You can see the eye stripe in front of the eye and I think the eyering is just obscure (moulting adults can have a dull eyering, I've certainly seen a few). You can also see the streaking at the botttom of the greyish chest that is typical of Green Sandpiper. The bill on Redshank is also comparitively thicker based than the bird in the image. I'll photoshop it when I get home from work and double check but I'm pretty sure it's a Green Sandpiper.

cheers, John

Have attached an image taken at Baron's Haugh RSPB reserve near Motherwell yesterday morning, it has 3 Green Sandpiper but note the bird right of centre, the eye ring is much less distinct than the bird to the left of it

cheers, John

IMO the bird in the 2nd image is a Redshank.

Sorry John, but I'm of the opinion the 2nd pic is a Redshank too.

Why do you say that, what features do you think make it a Redshank? It may well turn out be a Redshank as I can't make out enough detail to be certain either way, but there are features that don't fit Redshank, Particularly the beak. I like to ID birds using features I can see in an image and don't mind being proved wrong but only if I'm convinced which in this case I'm not (which doesn't mean I'm right of course )

cheers, John

Hi Bassist

Don't worry, a bit of healthy debate is good, as long as it's not taken too far or too seriously. Nobody is right all the time and I like to hear other people's opinion on birds, it's how we learn and can help to draw attention to small details that may aid with ID'ing birds in the future. I'm sure Merlin won't mind me asking, ID'ing certain birds from other peoples photo's is challenging as you don't see how the birds move and get views from different angles, it should also be fun and educational too

cheers, John
