Hello Dave,

Thank you for your post, very interesting. I have only seen one snow bunting myself which was so tame it was amazing (some dog walkers nearly trod on it) - and no seed had been but down for it or anything. It just wasn't afraid at all (and in very good condition). A wonderful experience.



I've talked to several other birders since and quite a few had similar stories of encounters with snow and lapland buntings - so I just assumed (wrongly) this might be their typical behaviour. Sorry!
Same with the turnstones...the birds I've seen so far along the West Sussex coast would not let us get anywhere near them, same with oystercatchers. I have also seen some in Germany and they were used to tourists and you could almost touch them (not that I tried!).
So thank you for your post, so interesting to learn about the different species.
