Question Rock Sparrow?

The stripes on its front and brighter beak,
Not noticed stripes on a house sparrow from here before so just wondering about this one as it looks different from the other house sparows.

That's a lesser redpoll, I reckon. (and a good pic, too!)

Where did you take it?

That's even better

I reckon this a female then?

It was at Loch Winnoch today. It was in amongst house sparrows so I reckoned it was another house sparrow at first.

Got Redpolls at Govan Old Docks yesterday but they didn't look like this one and I have just noticed the little patch of red on it's head.

This is one from Govan

Even better might be a bit subjective, Maggie.

Rock Sparrow would be a mega-rare bird in Scotland (or indeed England) and would no doubt attract lots of twitchers.

Personally, neither rock sparrow nor lesser redpoll are on my 2011 list so I'd take either

Thats a lovely second pic of the redpoll and I agree it looks quite different. There is more than one type of redpoll, and I'm confident that the first one is a 'lesser' but would have to ask an expert to confirm the second one, or indeed acccount for the differences (other than the light, which I've worked out for myself)

Two great Redpoll images Maggie!

I haven't seen a feather of one yet this year! Still, early days!

I think it is lesser and the Govan ones were Common.
Could be lesser also, just the sun was brighter on the Govan birds. Locwinnoch was in the shade.
Not 100% sure but that's my guess.

A Rock Sparrow would have been a "WooHoo" one.

They will get to eventually Judith just like the Waxwings
