You don't see many of them flying around here. I've seen one on the ground but it's a lifer in the air for me!

The plane looks like an Antonov heavy lift, I've had the pleasure to work next these a few times.
What lens are you using..

Yes, it's an Antonov An-124 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I had the Sigma 50-500 F4-6.4 with me today. I had it on autofocus, by the time I switched it off the flock had gone even further away.

I am thinking about buying the same lens, would you recommend it.
The body I'm using is a canon 550D

I use mine with a Nikon.

I got mine second hand, less than half price, I was torn between the 150-500 and this. The 50-500 came up as a good buy from a seller I could trust so went with it. It is the older, non OS model.

I am quite happy with it. I got it because I wanted a portable long tele as I can't lug the 500-800 on a long walk. It is heavier than I expected but nice and sharp, the 150-500 is on paper slightly lighter but I suspect it is a lot less bulky. It doesn't have a manual focus switch which means I have to use the one on the body which is impossible with gloves on.

It's got another annoying "feature" in that the lens will fall out to full zoom by gravity so when it's slung over the shoulder it always pops out and you are then toting a 2 foot long tube. It has a lock to prevent this but it's not convenient to keep flicking that switch, again not easy with gloves on.

I've been very negative, it is of course good value for money does the job nicely, it's not so horrendously expensive that it isn't covered on the household insurance and I have to worry about it all the time like I do with the 5-800.

Hope that helps.

Peter.

Thanks for your reply, you havn't put me off buying one, I will have to keep on saving as I am drawn to the Sigma 50-500mm f4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM, if I'm right they are retailing about £1100
I would consider a second hand lens, but I cannot find one for sale.
I wouldn't like to think what you paid for a 500-800
At the moment I'm using a canon 70-300mm which also falls out slowly to full zoom as I walk along.

Happy snapping
Paul

I haven't seen an OS one on the second hand market.

I am unconvinced of OS's benefits.
