Wow, great responses, I hope Neil can find his answer in amongst all this!!

I'm going with Posh-ard. Being an Essex boy it is easier to say. Not matter how I try I cannot get a T into that word, especially when it isn't there in the first place.

It's Potch-ard for me too, but I have heard people say Pock-ard.

As for scaup - it reminds me of a story I read on a forum somewhere (can't remember where now).

A woman recounts her time in a hide where a group of other women were talking about the scaup and asking each other ''Have you seen the Scaup?''

She was frantically searching the water for the duck, but to no avail. After 20 minutes or so, she realised that the other women were from Yorkshire and they were sharing a scope!!!!

Funny you should have this discussion today. I was looking for a Scaup yesterday and asked the RSPB guide if there'd been one sighted that day. I'd pronounced it Skay-up but he very kindly said nothing and then pronounced it very differently. It's just that I'd never heard anybody actually say the word before.

I then told him that I'd previously done the same thing with Pochard.
