If i am right doesn't the common have yellow legs and the herring have pink, more than likely wrong but i am sure someone will correct me.

Thanks all, I think LBB too now. I was hoping for Herring as I haven't had one yet.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough:

Gulls of Europe, Asia and North America Helm Identification Guides: Amazon.co.uk: Klaus Malling Olsen, Hans Larsson: Books

I find it invaluable - mind, I'm still useless at id'ing them, but at least I have a tome to consult and hopefuly improve
