Thanks Mike! I got some better shots of this bird today and several other experts have also confirmed that it is indeed a mealy (one saw the bird himself). So I'm really chuffed that I noticed the bird first and identified it correctly. AND it's a 'life tick'. Happy bunny!







@Peter: What I've learned is that if you're unsure, it is probably a lesser. A mealy really does stand out.

They are more frosted looking, they lack the warm colours,likely bigger in size,bull necked like bullfinch, tend to be a bully to with other redpolls,the rump can be near white to flecked pink,may notice white lines down the back(braces)

Wait till you see Common Redpoll of the Greenland race which comes to Scotland it is a real dark monster of a redpoll.
